The Johnson County Commission has officially adopted an ordinance authorizing a real estate property tax credit for eligible senior citizens.

This measure provides property tax relief for qualifying senior citizens on their primary residences, effective for the 2025 tax year. To qualify, residents must be at least 62 years old, own or have a legal interest in their primary residence and be responsible for paying real estate taxes on the property. The credit will be calculated based on the difference between an eligible taxpayer’s property tax liability in their qualifying year and subsequent tax years.

Applications for the tax credit will be accepted annually from April 1 through June 30, beginning in 2025. Applications, along with frequently asked questions and the adopted ordinance, are available at www.jcmtax.com/senior-tax-credit. The County Commission encourages eligible residents to review the application process and requirements.

Johnson County Collector Laura Smith will be present at several upcoming meetings to answer any questions regarding the credit.
-Wednesday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. at the Leeton SOS Meeting in the Leeton Community Building,
-Thursday, March 27, at noon in the Holden United Methodist Church.
