The Marshall High School Baseball team kicked off the 2025 spring baseball season with a pair of losses in a triangular with Tipton and Chillicothe. The Owls fell to the Cardinals 4-1 and then took the Hornets to extra innings before losing 12-7.
The Cardinals jumped all over Marshall starter Ian Miles to start the season, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Kye Wilcoxson came on in relief for the Owls, going five scoreless innings to keep Marshall in the game. The bats remained dormant throughout though, as Marshall only scored one run off Tipton starter Eli Higgins, who tossed a complete game with five strikeouts for the win. Miles drove in Marshall’s only run with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
The Owls then faced the Chillicothe later in the afternoon, after the Hornets knocked off Tipton 8-4.
Marshall got off to a good start against Chillicothe, plating three runs in the first inning. Marshall had opportunities to add to their lead in the second and third, but failed to get the key hits with runners in scoring position. Owls starter Brody Kueker cruised through the first four frames, only allowing two hits. He ran into some trouble in the fifth though, as the Hornets batted around and scored six runs in the inning, four of which were charged to Kueker. Brock Marshall came on in relief, getting the final two outs of the inning, but giving up two more runs in the process.
The Owls got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of several defensive miscues from the Hornets. Marshall did lose its lead-off man and one of its key contributors, Ian Miles, after he was hit in the face by a pitch and forced to leave the game.
Chillicothe added a run in the sixth, taking a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Owls weren’t done yet.
Brock Marshall drew a walk with one out in the seventh, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved over to third after a ground out, and then scored on a Logan Kirchhoff RBI single. MHS was then down to their final strike when Creighton Byrd hit a slow ground ball the dribbled past the second basmen’s glove, allowing Kirchhoff to advance to third and set up for Parker Hisle’s game-tying RBI single into center field and ultimately sending the game to extra innings.
Both teams traded scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, but the Hornets finally broke through, rallying in the top of the tenth against Chase Thompson. Thompson took the loss, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on two hits and five walks.
The Owls drop to 0-2 on the season. Marshall will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25, when they face Fulton at 5 p.m. Pregame coverage gets underway at 4:50 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300 and on KMMO.com.
