Catcher Iván Herrera gave the Cardinals faithful plenty of souvenirs to catch, as he delivered three home runs for St Louis in Wednesday afternoon’s 12-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Busch Stadium that staved off a sweep at home.
Herrera’s first home run tied the game in the fourth, after Mike Trout claimed his first home run of the season with a two-out shot to center field to get the Angels on the board first. Herrera then added a two-run blast in the sixth to give the Redbirds the lead. A grand slam from Logan O’Hoppe in the top of the seventh gave Los Angeles the lead, only for a double from Wilson Contreras to bring in two runs in the bottom half to knot the game back up.
The Angels bullpen ultimately proved fruitful for the Cardinals, as reliever Brock Burke issued bases-load walks to Contreras and Alec Burleson, a two-RBI single to Nolan Arenado, and then Herrera’s third home run of the game, in what turned out to be a seven-run inning for the Redbirds. Burke came in relief for Ian Anderson, who was tagged with the loss and blown save, charged with five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk, while striking out one. Sonny Gray went six innings in the start for the Cardinals, allowing five runs on five hits, but striking out nine. JoJo Romero picked up the win, going one-and-a-third innings without allowing a hit while striking out one.
The Cardinals are atop the NL Central with a 4-2 record. It’s a travel day Thursday, ahead of a three-game series at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Friday’s game is at 1:10 p.m.
