Chad Lance has announced his decision to step down as head coach of the Missouri Valley College men’s basketball team.

Lance spent 22 seasons as head coach, accumulating a program-best 312 wins. Five of his teams finished the season nationally ranked, including the 2014-15 squad that marked the program’s first NAIA postseason tournament berth in 54 years by way of their first Heart of America Athletic Conference postseason tournament championship. Individually, three of Lance’s players earned individual conference honors, including this past winter’s defensive player of the year, Cawhan Smith. Another two players earned all-defensive team honors, along with seven first-team placements and 51 all-conference selections. Five of Lance’s players scored at least one-thousand career points.

Lance’s announced departure closes a three-decade affiliation with Missouri Valley, which started with his playing days as a Viking in the 1990s before becoming a graduate assistant and then an assistant coach. His decision to step down comes within days of longtime assistant coach Ramone Powell making the move across town to become the new head coach for the Marshall High School girls basketball team.
