The past weekend’s Drug Take Back events resulted in one area law enforcement agency collecting over 150 pounds of unused medications.
The Marshall Police Department says they collected over 153 pounds of prescription drugs at their collection point outside Walmart. Also sponsoring a collection Saturday was the Sedalia Police Department, who also went to their local Walmart and collected about 50 pounds of medications, ranging from tablets and capsules to liquids, patches and vaping devices.
The unwanted and unused medications will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency, who sponsored the annual event for over 4400 other agencies nationwide. The medication will be incinerated in an effort to prevent prescription drug abuse and making sure prescription drugs no longer needed don’t fall into the wrong hands. Since the first Drug Take Back Day in 2010, the DEA has collected more than 19.2 million pounds of unwanted medication.
Sedalia Police note that several pharmacies and law enforcement agencies offer permanent drug disposal boxes. Anyone needing to dispose of unwanted medication can contact their local law enforcement agency to find their nearest dropoff location.
