
The Kansas City Royals set the pace early and stayed in front throughout Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
The Royals turned Jonathan India’s leadoff single into the game’s first run, with a pair of ground outs advancing him to third, and allowing Salvador Perez to bring him home with a double to center field. Another fly ball brought in the Royals’ second run in the next inning, when Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice allowed Drew Waters to score. The Rays claimed their only run in the fourth when Junior Caminero sent a line drive over the center field fence. Freddy Fermin added an insurance run in the ninth with his single to right field, scoring Maikel Garcia.
Michael Lorenzen picked up his third win of the season, allowing the lone run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings. Carlos Estévez secured his eighth save of the season. Fermin led the Royals offense with three singles, while Bobby Witt Jr landed a hit for the 20th straight game.
The Royals are back to .500 on the season, sitting three games behind Detroit for the AL Central lead. Following an injury to Cole Ragans, left-hander Noah Cameron will get the call up from the minors to make his major league debut, starting Wednesday’s game. The St Joseph Central product takes the mound after first pitch tonight at 6:05 p.m., with pregame beginning at 5:30 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
The Saint Louis Cardinals’ game against the Cincinnati Reds was rained out Tuesday night. A day-night doubleheader will take place Wednesday. Tuesday night’s scheduled starters of Miles Mikolas and Brady Singer will remain on the lineup card for the matinee, with first pitch Wednesday morning at 11:40 a.m. Steven Matz will get the start for the Redbirds in the regularly scheduled contest set for 5:40 p.m.
