The Missouri Valley Vikings secured the two extra sets needed to advance to the semifinals, defeating defending champions Georgetown of Kentucky and Lawrence Tech of Michigan in Friday morning’s tiebreaker at the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championships in Cedar Rapids.

The sixth-seeded Vikings were in the third spot in Pool C following their four-set loss to Lawrence Tech, resulting in a rematch with Georgetown. The Vikings set the pace early, forcing the Tigers to play catch up, and were able to keep the lead to the end, ending Georgetown’s title defense with a 25-21 win. 45 minutes later, the Vikings took on Tech, building up an advantage that the Blue Devils were able to close late, but were never able to take the lead. Tech couldn’t cleanly respond to Luca Hasse’s set-point serve, giving Valley the berth into Friday afternoon’s semifinals.

There won’t be much time for Valley to prepare for the semifinals, as they’ll have the first bout at 4 p.m. against second-seed and undefeated St Xavier of Illinois. Undefeated top-seed The Master’s of California faces St Thomas of Florida in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The championship contest is Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m.
