Sporting Kansas City held San Diego FC to a scoreless draw in the first-ever matchup between the two sides Saturday, May 17 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

Sporting were without Wednesday’s hero Dejan Joveljic, but came close to snatching all three points from the Western Conference’s third-place team when Shapi Suleymanov sent an attempt over the head of keeper CJ Dos Santos. His shot hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Sporting recorded just two shots to San Diego’s 10, including four attempts on goal.

Also on the road Saturday night, St Louis City SC’s poor form continued as they fell 3-0 at Minnesota United. Roman Bürki was peppered with 20 Minnesota shot attempts, including seven on goal. The Loons scored on goals from Tani Oluwaseyi in the first half, then Joaquín Pereyra and Julian Gressel in the second half. City made ten shot attempts, with four saves recorded by Minnesota’s Dayne St Clair.

The results leave both teams further behind in the Western Conference table, with Sporting 13th on 12 points, six behind the ninth and final playoff position, and St Louis City 14th on 11 points. Sporting return home Saturday night to host New England, while City travel to Colorado to face the Rapids.

Earlier in the weekend, the Kansas City Current solidified their position atop the NWSL table with a 1-0 victory Friday night at the Orlando Pride.  Temwa Chawinga had the game’s lone goal, netting it in the 52nd minute to lift the Current to a 7-0-2 mark in league play.  Lorena posted her fifth clean sheet of the season.  The Current travel Saturday to face the Chicago Stars SC.
