Willson Contreras scored on a sacrifice fly and brought in another run with a ground-rule double as the St Louis Cardinals evened their series with the Texas Rangers on Saturday, May 31 in Arlington, winning 2-0.

Contreras led off the second with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a groundout. That set up Nolan Arenado’s sacrifice fly to center, easily bringing Contreras home. Contreras then made use of Masyn Winn’s leadoff double in the fourth, sending a line drive down the left-field line that bounced in fair territory before going over the fence.

Those two runs were charged to Patrick Corbin, who allowed three hits and two walks while fanning three in the losing effort. Sonny Gray had seven shutout innings, striking out ten while allowing four hits and a walk. Ryan Helsley claimed two strikeouts as part of his 13th save of the season.

The Cardinals remain three games behind the Cubs for the NL Central lead at 33-25, tied with San Diego for the second wild card position. The series with Texas concludes Sunday at 12:05 p.m. at Globe Life Field, when Erich Fedde gets the start.
