Base runners were a rare commodity for the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers, as the two sides combined for just six hits and two walks, but it was Vinnie Pasquantino’s single in the eighth that provided the only run in the Royals’ 1-0 win Saturday, May 31 at Kauffman Stadium.

Pasquantino’s single came with one out in the inning, after Nick Lofton doubled to get on base. The two hits and lone run were charged to Beau Brieske, who took the loss for Detroit. John Schreiber picked up the win for the Royals, striking out two and allowing a walk during his lone inning.

The game was decidedly a pitchers dual, with Detroit’s Tarik Skubal limiting the Royals to two hits while striking out seven in his seven innings of work. The Royals’ Michael Wacha also went seven innings, allowing a walk in the fourth and single in the seventh, while striking out six. Carlos Estévez allowed a two-out single in the ninth but claimed the final out to secure his 16th save of the season. Colt Keith had both Detroit hits, while Nick Lofton had two of the Royals’ four hits.

The Royals are now 31-28, seven games behind the Tigers in the AL Central and a half-game behind Houston for the third wild card spot. The Royals and Tigers complete their series Sunday afternoon with Kris Bubic taking the mound. Pregame is at 12:30 p.m., with first pitch at 1:10 p.m., on KMMO-FM 102.9.
