Craig Thompson will move one seat over at the next meeting of the Marshall City Council, following a vote of his peers Tuesday, June 17 to become the next mayor of Marshall.

Thompson abstained from the 7-0 vote elevating him from fourth ward councilman to the mayor’s office, taking over a post that has sit vacant for nearly two months. After the meeting he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the city.

The vote came at the end of Tuesday night’s meeting. Thompson will need to be sworn in at the next council meeting. One of his first tasks as mayor will be to nominate his successor for the fourth ward council seat. He encourages eligible residents in the ward to contact him, city clerk Julie Lewis, or city administrator JD Kehrman to express interest in the position. Both Thompson and the next fourth ward councilman will have their seats on the ballot in next April’s municipal election, as both positions were due for election in 2026.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council enacted two changes to how the city handles code violations. An ordinance allowing enforcement of code violations through municipal court passed by a 7-1 voter, with third ward councilman Jeremy Gibson opposed. All eight council members supported the ordinance to allow the physical posting of notices on property where violations are reported. Thompson says he looks forward to the changes providing for a safer community.

The Marshall City Council also approved the reappointment of Michael Brennan, Jacquelyn Guthrey, and Mary Williams to four-year terms on the Marshall Public Library board. Guthrey is currently the board’s president.
