The Marshall Fire Department has provided additional details into the altercation Tuesday, June 24 between Marshall Police and a man now facing assault charges.

According to a report from the department, a Marshall fire captain responded to the intersection of Odell and Eastwood Avenue around 2 a.m., where police had received calls of a man knocking on doors and pushing a shopping cart containing several shotguns. As officers were arresting the man identified as 26-year-old John Robert Hooper, they discovered homemade explosive and incendiary devices in the shopping cart. The fire captain proceeded to don his safety equipment and disarm the devices. Photos were sent to a representative of the Whiteman Air Force Base Bomb Squad for further analysis.

Police say that in addition to the shotguns and explosives, Hooper had in his possession baggies of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, as well as epi-pens prescribed to Marshall Public Schools. Court documents say that officers also recovered copper and equipment that Hooper is believed to have stolen from the nearby Eastwood Elementary School. Hooper also allegedly struggled with officers when attempting to regain possession of one of his shotguns, resulting in one of the guns discharging a round into the ground.

Hooper will go before a Saline County judge Wednesday morning for his initial appearance on charges of first degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of an illegal weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a controlled substance. He’s being held in the Saline County jail with no bond allowed.
