
It took Sonny Gray just 89 pitches go the distance, tossing a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, June 27.
Gray retired the first 14 batters he faced before giving up the lone Cleveland hit in the fifth to Nolan Jones. He strukc out 11 batters and picked up his eighth win of the season. The shutout is also Gray’s first since 2015.
St. Louis took the lead in the third with homers from Pedro Pages and Alec Burleson. Nolan Arenado contributed with RBI hits in the sixth and eighth.
The Cardinals improve to 45-38 on the season, still third in the NL Central and 3.5 games back of Chicago for the division lead. St. Louis will go for the series win in Cleveland on Saturday, June 28. Miles Mikolas gets the start for the Cardinals. First pitch is at 3:10 p.m.
