The Marshall man arrested last month near Eastwood Elementary School on charges of assault and armed criminal action is now facing a burglary charge.
26-year-old John Robert Hooper now faces a charge of second-degree burglary, after Marshall Police say Hooper broke into the recently closed school. Hooper had initially been arrested the morning of June 24 after he was reported by residents to have been pushing a shopping cart containing shotguns and homemade explosives. Investigators say that they discovered a trail of wires and pipe wrap insulation leading to a broken window at the school, where they allege that Hooper broke into the building.
According to the probable cause statement, officers matched wiring found in Hooper’s home, as well as a projector and other technology, to similar equipment still in place at Eastwood. A maintenance worker with Marshall Schools noted in the statement that the building had been experiencing plumbing issues because the pipes had been cut. The statement goes on to say that Hooper admitted to taking copper pipes and wiring from the building but not the technology, and said he used bolt cutters to extract the pipes and wires.
Hooper remains behind bars without bond on his original charges including first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and possession of a controlled substance. A preliminary hearing on these charges is set for the afternoon of July 23, while a confined docket hearing on the new charge is set for Wednesday morning.
