The heat of summer will give way to festive holiday cheer this weekend outside Miami, when the Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park hosts its inaugural Christmas in July.
Campers taking part in the festivities will begin decorating their sites Friday, July 18. Park specialist John Hagermann says a full day of events for park visitors will begin 10 a.m. Saturday with an ugly sweater fashion show.
Visitors can make Christmas crafts and treats including cookies in the cultural center from noon, while a storyteller will recount Native American Christmas tales at the day-use area at 6:30 p.m. Hagermann says visitors can then drive thru the campground after dark to view the lights, including a Christmas tree.
Visitors will also have a chance to cast their vote for the best-decorated campsite, with the winners receiving a prize Sunday morning. The Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park is located at the end of Route 122, southwest of Miami.
