A heat advisory remains in effect for our listening area until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Heat index values of up to 111 degrees are expected Monday and Tuesday in Chillicothe and Moberly, while values as high as 108 are expected in Sedalia. Residents are reminded that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

In response to the heat, Marshall Municipal Utilities has issued a peak alert for the next two days. MMU is asking its customers to reduce their electrical usage between 2 and 6 p.m. Their suggestions include setting your thermostat to 78”F and avoid using large appliances or charging electric vehicles.

Community buildings across the area are doubling as cooling centers. In Marshall, the Salt Fork YMCA will have its lobby open as a cooling center during its normal hours, closing at 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7 p.m. on Fridays, and 6 p.m. on the weekends. The Marshall Public Library and Martin Community Center are also available as cooling centers during their regular hours. Elsewhere in Saline County, residents needing a cooling center in Sweet Springs can visit City Hall weekdays until 5 p.m. The City of Slater will have city hall open during business hours as a cooling center, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Lafayette County, both the Margaret Gray Senior Center and the Lafayette County Health Department in Lexington are available as cooling centers until 5 p.m. Senior centers in Concordia and Higginsville will be available for residents needing a cool down until 2 p.m.

Elsewhere in Missouri, the state Department of Health and Senior Services is maintaining a map of cooling centers. Residents may also contact their city or county’s emergency management offices for information.
