A Sedalia man is facing a gun charge in federal court after a shooting earlier this month in Southwest Missouri.

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri accuses 23-year-old Kenkori Lenell Grant Jr of being a felon in possession of a pistol equipped with a high-capacity magazine. According to a news release from the Department of Justice, the Springfield Police Department responded to a shooting in the downtown area around midnight on July 20, and located a pistol under a car in the vicinity. Officers say they then located surveillance footage that showed who they believe to be Grant placing the firearm under the vehicle after the shooting.

Grant has a number of previous convictions in Pettis County, including guilty pleas in 2019 to second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and harassment, and a guilty plea last February to unlawful possession of a firearm. Last week a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in a Boone County court on a 2024 charge that he fraudulently used a debit or credit device. Grant’s initial court appearance on the federal charge was Tuesday, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday.
