Two fixtures in the St Louis Cardinals bullpen are on their way east, as the franchise dealt star closer Ryan Helsley and reliever Steven Matz on Wednesday, July 30 for prospects.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s game against Miami, the Cardinals announced that the two-time All-Star Helsley would go to the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitchers Nate Dohm and Frank Elissalt, aliong with infielder Jesus Baez. Helsley had the longest tenure with the Cardinals prior to the trade, recording 105 saves, including a franchise season record of 49 last season. The Tahlequah, Okla. native will wrap his time in St Louis an out shy of recording 300 innings pitched, and will find himself alongside another stellar closer in the Mets bullpen, Edwin Díaz.

The Mets have sent two of their top 15 prospects as part of the year. Baez was ranked eighth in their system, recording 30 home runs and 29 stolen bases in Single-A. Nate Dohm ranked 14th in the Mets system and has appeared in 18 games, also in Single-A, recording a 2.87 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. Also joining the Cardinals is Frank Elissalt, who has made seven starts and appeared in 14 other games in Single-A.

A separate deal announced late Wednesday is sending Steven Matz to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor-league infielder Blaze Jordan. Matz this season has made 32 appearances, recording a 5-2 record with a 3.44 ERA. Meanwhile, Jordan has appeared in 44 games for the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate Worcester, recording 51 hits and 25 RBIs, including six home runs.

While the Cardinals spent Wednesday night selling, the Kansas City Royals remained steady, with their most recent transaction being Tuesday night’s move to designate pitcher Rich Hill for assignment. Hill recorded losses in both his starts for KC, going just four innings in Monday’s 10-7 loss to Atlanta. Reliever Thomas Hatch was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

The trade deadline is Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. Central.
