The Kansas City Current made a splash on and off the pitch Friday, Aug. 1, netting two second-half goals at Racing Louisville to win 2-0, while making a trade for a rising star.
The Current were scoreless at the half at Lynn Family Stadium, before a cross from Michelle Cooper into the box was notched home at close range in the 65th minute by Temwa Chawinga. Seven minutes later, Elizabeth Ball marked her 100th career NWSL regular season game with a header off a free kick. Laurel Ivory recorded the clean sheet as the Current claimed their seventh straight win, extending their lead over second-place Orlando by 11 points ahead of the Pride’s game Sunday afternoon.
The Current’s status as the league’s top team may have been cemented further before the game, when the team announced a trade with Utah for last year’s top overall draft pick, midfielder Ally Sentnor. The 21-year-old North Carolina graduate made 34 appearances for Utah, netting four goals. She’s also scored just as many goals in 12 caps for the U.S. Women’s National Team, including two first-half goals against Jamaica last month in St Louis. Utah will receive $600,000 from the Current over the next three seasons. Sentnor could make her debut in teal next Friday against her former squad at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
