After several games where the St Louis Cardinals fell behind early, it was the Redbirds who were plating runs early and often in Tuesday, Aug. 19’s 7-4 win over the Miami Marlins in Miami.

Iván Herrera brought in the games’ first three runs. A single to right field in the first brought home Lars Nootbaar, while another single in the second scored Thomas Saggese and Nathan Church. Pedro Pagés added an RBI single in the third, scoring Nolan Gorman. The Marlins got on the board in the fourth with a Jakob Marsee triple scoring Xavier Edwards. He would then score on a fielder’s choice by Agustín Ramírez, resulting in Ramírez advancing to second on a throwing error by starting pitcher Michael McGreevy.

The Cardinals got those runs back in the top of the fifth, when Pedro Pagés advanced to first after his swining strikeout turned into a passed ball that also scored Masyn Winn. Church would added a sacrifice bunt later in the inning. Miami scored two runs in the sixth off an Otto Lopez single to center, while Saggese capped the scoring in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to score Wynn.

Saggese was three-for-four to lead the Cardinals offense, as the Redbirds collected 12 hits and drew a pair of walks. McGreevy completed six innings of work for the win, allowing all four Miami runs (three earned) on six hits and five strikeouts. Riley O’Brien allowed two walks but recorded two strikeouts for his second save of the year.

The Cardinals improve to 63-64, five games behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. Andre Pallante will take the mound as the Cardinals go for the sweep Wednesday evening; first pitch is at 5:40 p.m.
