St Louis City took the lead twice, but a pair of penalty kicks helped the Vancouver Whitecaps to take control of the game and post a 3-2 win Saturday, Aug. 23 at BC Place.
Eduard Löwen opened the scoring for St Louis in the 14th minute off a cross from Conrad Wallem. A foul in stoppage time allowed Brian White to tie the game with a penalty kick. The game remained tied until the 73rd minute, when João Klauss turned a pass from Sangbin Jeong into a goal that slid past keeper Yohei Takaoka. Vancouver equalized six minutes later when Daniel Rios headed a cross from Sebastian Berhalter. Another penalty was awarded to Vancouver well into stoppage time, and in the 14th minute of added time, Thomas Müeller scored his first goal in MLS since his transfer from Bayern Munich, outwitting Roman Bürki to net the game-winner.
Vancouver recorded twice as many shots on goal as St Louis and drew 11 corners, compared to just one for City. Bürki recorded four saves in the contest. The loss has City 14th in the Western Conference, 14 points behind Austin for the ninth playoff position. City return home Saturday night to face Houston, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City will face the Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening at 8:15 p.m. Sporting are on a three-game losing streak and have yet to win a match since the Fourth of July.
