Sonny Gray kept the San Francisco Giants hitless for five innings, but after the Cardinals’ four-run rally in the fifth, the bullpen came in to prevent the Giants from doing the same, holding on for a 4-3 win Sunday, Sept. 7 in St. Louis.

Grey allowed just a walk in his first five innings, and the Cardinals were finally able to capitalize in the fifth inning. Giants starter Kai-Wei Tang walked the first three batters he faced in the frame, then allowed an RBI single to Lars Nootbaar to wrap up his day. With reliever José Buttó on the mound, Iván Herrera tacked on a run with an RBI single, then Nolan Gorman drew a bases-loaded walk to score José Fermín. Buttó achieved a double play from a Masyn Winn grounder, but allowed Nootbaar to score on the play.

Gray’s sixth inning started similarly, giving up two leadoff walks. He was able to strike out Heliot Ramos, but proceeded gave up his first single and run to Rafael Devers. A passed ball, walk, and Dominic Smith RBI single ended Gray’s day, replaced by Matt Svanson. A single to Matt Chapman made the game 4-3, but Svanson was able to get a strikeout and lineout to cap the damage. JoJo Romero and Riley O’Brien each pitched a shutout inning to maintain the Cardinals’ lead, with O’Brien claiming his third save of the year.

Gray allowed three runs on two hits and four walks, striking out six in five-and-a-third innings to pick up his 13th win of the season.

The Cardinals are back to .500 with a 72-72 record, 17 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and four-and-a-half games behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. A three-game series at Seattle awaits the Redbirds, with Miles Mikolas getting the start Monday evening. First pitch from T-Mobile Park is at 8:40 p.m.
