A three-run home run in the fourth inning by Cincinnati’s Spencer Steer doomed the St Louis Cardinals to a 6-2 loss Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Busch Stadium.

Steer’s three-run shot came with one out in the fourth, after Cardinals starter Andre Pallante gave up walks to Sal Stewart and Elly De La Cruz. The home run doomed Pallante to his 15th loss of the season, as he also allowed a run to score in the fifth inning after a wild pitch. All four runs were earned in his five innings of work, where he allowed six hits and three walks while striking out three.

Despite allowing a home run to Alec Burleson in the first, Brady Singer limited the Redbirds to just three hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.2 innings for his 14th win of the year. The Cardinals’ second run was unearned, after Iván Herrera’s fielders choice scored Lars Nootbaar in the sixth by way of a throwing error. The Reds added their final two runs in the seventh with a single from Steer.

The Cardinals are now 74-79, 4.5 games behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. The final home series of the season begins Friday when Milwaukee pay a visit to Busch Stadium.
