The operative word was sweep as the higher seeded teams all won in 3-0 fashion during first-round action Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Class One, District 14 Volleyball Tournament hosted by Sweet Springs.

Concordia, Northwest of Hughesville and Crest Ridge were all successful during the triple-header heard on KMMO. The closest skirmish of the evening was the opener with fourth-seeded Concordia coming from behind to slip past fifth-seeded La Monte in 1-2-3 fashion. The Orioles trailed throughout the first set, finding themselves down 23-19 before they scored six straight points to pull out a 25-23 victory against the Vikings. During the rest of the match, Concordia took charge earlier in the proceedings on their way to posting 25-16 and 25-17 wins against La Monte. The Orioles improved to 15-11-4 with the victory as La Monte closed out their year at 10-16-2.

Tuesday evening’s other matches were both decided early as second-seeded Northwest of Hughesville breezed past Leeton, 25-6, 25-2 and 25-8. The win was the 21st of the season for the Mustangs while Leeton, in only the second year of having volleyball at their school, ended up with a mark of 1-25-1.

Closing out the long night of district action, a pair of I-70 Conference teams met with third-seeded Crest Ridge disposing of the host school, Sweet Springs, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-14. The Cougars thus continued their mastery over the Greyhound spikers, having not lost to them since September 2013. With the win, Crest Ridge now has a record of 20-13-1 while Sweet Springs wraps the year up at 11-20.

Semifinal action from Sweet Springs is Wednesday, with top seed Santa Fe coming off their bye to face Concordia at 6 p.m., followed by Northwest challenging Crest Ridge. We’ll have both games on KMMO-FM 102.9 and online at kmmo.com.
