The City of Holden’s treasurer is facing charges that she made unauthorized purchases on a city-issued credit card that totaled over $100,000.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday, Nov. 6 that 37-year-old Trista Garrett was charged with identity theft and stealing by appropriating at least $25,000 of property. According to the probable cause statement, Garrett admitted to a Holden police officer that she had used a city-issued credit card last week at a hair salon in Pleasant Hill, but claimed that it was an accident. The matter was referred to the sheriff’s department for investigation.
A detective for the department obtained card statements from the city’s bank, which they said included a “Spending Pattern Exceptions” list, detailing transactions believed to be outside the previous pattern of the card’s usage. Detectives say the list contained transactions since May that did not relate to the City of Holden, including two Venmo transactions totaling $30,000. The sheriff’s office said 23 pages of statements obtained by investigators contained 984 transactions that totaled $120,000. Detectives added that during questioning, Garrett admitted to the purchases and using another city employee’s card to make purchases for her personal use, which exceeded 100-thousand dollars.
The sheriff’s office says that Garrett turned herself in on the arrest warrant issued Thursday) and posted bond of $10,000 cash. A court date has not yet been set for her initial appearance.
