Harrison Butker’s fifth field goal of the afternoon capped a successful comeback for the Kansas City Chiefs, snapping a two-game skid to beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-20 in overtime Sunday, Nov. 23.

The game started promising for Kansas City, as the defense forced the Colts to punt on their first drive. However, two plays into the Chiefs’ first drive, Laiatu Latu intercepted Patrick Mahomes, setting up the Colts’ first touchdown of the game. The Chiefs’ next drive went over eight minutes, but after a face mask call negated a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce, the Chiefs had to settle for Butker’s first field goal of the day. Indianapolis would add their second touchdown on the next drive, but the Chiefs would add field goals of 48 and 22 yards on their next two drives to close out the half.

The Chiefs were forced to punt on their first two possessions, while Indianapolis extended the lead with a pair of field goals. The defense was able to clamp down on Indianapolis’ offense, but the Chiefs offense was slow to get into gear, as the Colts forced a fumble in the red zone to start the fourth quarter. The Chiefs forced a three-and-out to give Mahomes the ball back. 11 plays and 56 yards later, the Chiefs were back within one score.  Kareem Hunt leapt over the line to record the touchdown, then Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice on the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to three.

After both teams exchanged punts, the Chiefs engineered a 15-play drive to run down the clock. After Mahomes was sacked on third and goal, the Chiefs tied the game as time ran out with Butker’s fourth field goal. The Colts took the kickoff in overtime and went three-and-out for the fourth straight drive. The Chiefs completed the comeback with another long drive, going 81 yards to set up the game winning field goal with two minutes remaining.

Mahomes went 29-for-46, throwing for 352 yards, as he surpassed the 35,000 yard mark in his career. 141 of those yards were to Rashee Rice on eight catches, nearly of those yards in the second half or overtime. Kareem Hunt carried the ball 30 times for 104 yards. The Chiefs defense limited Jonathan Taylor to 58 yards on 16 carries, and while they didn’t sack Daniel Jones all game, they did limit him to a three-for-nine mark in the fourth quarter and overtime. Jones wrapped up the game 19-for-31 for 181 yards.

The Chiefs improve to 6-5 on the season, gaining a half-game on Denver in the AFC West as the Broncos were off this week. However, the Chiefs still trail Buffalo, Jacksonville and the LA Chargers by a game, with all three having defeated the Chiefs. It’s a quick turnaround for the Chiefs, as they’ll play Thursday afternoon at AT&T Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. Pregame will begin at 1:30 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
