A Brunswick man was arrested over the weekend and charged with resisting arrest after law enforcement attempted to question him about a fire at his apartment.
According to online records, Brunswick Police attempted to stop 49-year-old James Henry Watts III on Saturday, Dec. 6 just west of the city, hours after a fire fully engulfed an apartment building on the 100 block of East Harrison. The probable cause statement alleges that someone was discovered unresponsive in a ditch near the apartment and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Another witness alleged that Watts had been seen leaving the area of the fire shortly before it was reported and was then seen circling the area.
Police say they attempted to detain Watts for questioning during their traffic stop, but he drove away after refusing multiple commands for him to exit the vehicle. The Highway Patrol was able to pull Watts over about two hours later near DeWitt and take him into custody.
Watts is facing a charge of fleeing arrest and causing a substantial risk of serious injury to a person. He’s also facing charges filed last month of domestic assault and kidnapping following an incident at his apartment. Watts had been released on his own recognizance but is now facing a motion to have his bond revoked. Bond has not yet been set on his new charge, with his initial hearing scheduled for Jan. 13.
