This spring will mark the last semester for the current location of Marshall Public Schools’ transportation department, as the Board of Education voted Tuesday, Jan. 13 to declare the current location as surplus ahead of its relocation this summer to the Northeast Campus.

Board members agreed to the recommendation from Supt. Caleb Petet, who outlines the next steps for the current facility.

The district will convert the former Habilitation Center dietary building into their new bus barn, using funds leftover from construction of the Marshall Intermediate School. The facility is expected to include a 75′-by-65′ work bay, with a wash site along a slope, offices and a kitchen.

Also approved for a surplus declaration and listing for sale are the two residential lots along South Odell between Prairie and Meadow that were swapped with the Marshall Saline Development Corporation for the Northwest School.

The board of education also passed a resolution affirming completion of the demolition of the Eastwood School, in anticipation of the formal handoff of the lot to the City of Marshall, which the board authorized president Bryon Jacques to sign. Petet says while the target date of Dec. 31 was missed, the district and city still have until May 31, 2026 to complete the transfer.

Also Tuesday night, the board declared that exactly three candidates filed for the three open seats on the board, which will result in the contest not appearing on this April’s municipal election ballot. Jack Lenz and current vice president Matt Smith will each receive another three-year term on the board. Andreas Enyart will join the board in April and succeed Amy Green, who decided to not file for re-election.
