Points and possessions were more than precious Tuesday night when Glasgow visited New Franklin for a Central Activities Conference basketball doubleheader that was heard on KMMO-FM.

It was an evening where defenses dominated and any team that was fortunate enough to score three straight baskets could claim they were enjoying the benefits of a huge, offensive explosion. When the dust had settled in the aftermath of a couple of physical, low-scoring battles, each school was able to claim one win for the evening. First, the New Franklin girls pulled away late to beat Glasgow, 43-34 which preceded the Yellowjacket boys holding on down the stretch to knock off the home team in their matchup, 48-43. All four teams had hit the floor unbeaten in league play with everyone now at least one-third of the way into their CAC Conference seasons.

The girls’ contest featured New Franklin weathering an early storm while failing to score the first five and a half minutes of the game as they found themselves trailing 13-5 after one period. The second quarter saw things turn around very abruptly with the Bulldogs then outscoring Glasgow 15-3 in that period to take a 20-16 halftime lead. The Yellowjackets did make one last run at New Franklin, slicing the deficit to 27-26 with only eight minutes left. But just as suddenly, Glasgow’s offense went missing again for several minutes in the final period, opening the door for the Bulldogs’ 43-34 victory.

Now 3-0 in the CAC and 11-2 overall, New Franklin was paced by 17 points from Lily Chitwood while Halle Fuemmeler tossed in 14 for the Jackets, who dropped to 2-1 in the league and 8-5 for the season.

The boys’ game saw Glasgow on top from wire to wire but never by very much. The Yellowjackets had to protect leads that ranged from two to seven points most of the way. Glasgow was ahead 6-4 after one period and then 21-16 at the break before owning an advantage of 32-28 going into the final frame. New Franklin then failed to score the first four and a half minutes of the fourth quarter which allowed the visitors to open up an 11-point lead. To their credit, New Franklin did trim the deficit to three during the final minute before eventually losing 48-43.

Glasgow’s Jackson Meyer tossed in 22 points for a Yellowjacket squad that has now won eight straight contests while improving to 3-0 in the conference and 10-2 on the year. The loss was the third in a row at home for New Franklin who dropped to 2-1 in the CAC and 9-4 overall. The Bulldogs were paced by 19 points from Caden Schlotzhauer.
