Classes are returning to normal Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026 at Smith-Cotton Junior High, after students needed to use an AMI day Tuesday while Sedalia School District 200 officials awaited results of air tests for asbestos.

District officials announced late Tuesday afternoon that several air samples collected over the weekend from an area of the building where floor tiles had become exposed came back negative. Supt. Dr Todd Fraley tells KMMO News that the classroom where asbestos particles were discovered last week had recently been repurposed.

Fraley says after tests submitted to a Kansas City area firm confirmed the presence of asbestos, the district made use of the four-day weekend to address the situation.

Fraley adds that floors at Smith-Cotton Junior High are resealed each summer as part of the district’s preventative maintenance program. A copy of the test results is posted on the Sedalia School District 200’s website.
