Centralia and Odessa faced tough competition in their bids to defend their state boys wrestling championships, as they both finished third in their respective districts over the weekend.

Four Odessa wrestlers won their weight class and three others qualified for state, but it was their rivals Oak Grove who claimed the Class Two, District 4 title in Excelsior Springs. The Panthers will have eight wrestlers advancing to state later this week in Columbia, led by weight class champions Lex Johnston at 113 pounds and Kale Martin at 106 pounds. The Bulldogs’s bid for a third straight state title will be led by district champions Jet Brown at 150 pounds, Michael Scott at 190, Makai Smalley at 138, and Lake Waters at 157 pounds.

At the Class One, District 3 tournament hosted by Lafayette County, the Centralia Panthers qualified eight wrestlers for state, with Rex Bryson’s quest for another individual state title continuing by way of a district title at 175 pounds. Bryson claimed an 83-second fall in the championship bout over Jack Sportsman of Marceline; however, four other Tigers won district class titles to lift Marceline to a second-place finish. Markos Black won at 190 pounds, while Roper Niemeier claimed the 132-pound title, Reece Stufflebean at 113 pounds, and Carter Wallis at 138 pounds.

Warsaw rolled to the Class One, District 2 title with five of their seven state qualifiers winning their weight class. Johrdan Decker prevailed at 144 pounds, while Jayce Estes returns to state with the district title at 113 pounds. Josh Harvath won the 190-pound title, along with Sean Reinertsen at 126 pounds and Bostyn Wilson at 175 pounds. Lone Jack finished second in the team standings, qualifying nine for state. Also at District 2, Versailles’ Brandon Brewer remains on track to defend his state title, winning the 120-pound title with a 5-3 decision over Wyatt Weekley of Cass Sherwood.

In Class Three, Warrensburg qualified four wrestlers including a class champion at the District Four meet hosted by Belton. Jaylen Civil secured a major decision over Presley Hartwig of St Michael the Archangel in the title match, 26-17. The Tigers finished sixth in the district with 91-and-a-half points. Marshall placed eighth with 66 points, with two Owls finishing fourth to qualify for state: Olivin Chavez at 144 pounds and Lane Dunfee at 165 pounds.

In Class Four, Smith-Cotton’s lone representative at state next weekend will arrive as a district champion. Adarein Hawkins won the 126-pound class at the District Three tournament hosted by Joplin, capping it with a fall with 12 seconds remaining in the championship bout against Rolla’s Carter Libhart.
