A Boonville man arrested last month on domestic assault charges is now facing a new accusation that he assaulted a law enforcement officer behind bars.
Court documents accuse 44-year-old James Wayne O’Bryan of punching a Cooper County Sheriff’s deputy in the face several times as two deputies were attempting to question O’Bryan about digging at his cell wall with an object. One of the deputies attempted to tase O’Bryan, but after it failed to work, O’Bryan allegedly grabbed the other deputy as a shield. O’Bryan is then alleged to have thrown more punches at the first deputy, pinning him to the wall, and then stabbing him in the back four times with the deputy’s pen. O’Bryan is also accused of briefly escaping from a hospital where he was taken for treatment, when he allegedly pushed past a detention officer.
O’Bryan had been arrested last month after his brother accused him of punching him with a knife in one of his hands, then punching several windows out on his brother’s vehicle. O’Bryan now faces charges of first-degree assault of a special victim and armed criminal action. His bond is now set at $250,000. A counsel status hearing on the earlier charges of domestic assault, property damage, armed criminal action, and resisting arrest is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
