The Kansas City Royals needed a late RBI from Lane Thomas to defeat the Seattle Mariners 7-6 Friday night in T-Mobile Park.
The Royals didn’t waste any time, torching Seattle starter Bryan Woo with four runs in the first inning. Vinnie Pasquantino got things started with an RBI single, followed by Salvador Perez’s two-run double and an RBI double from Isaac Collins.
Seattle got two runs back in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of Julio Rodriguez. Connor Joe homered for Seattle in the fifth to make it 4-3.
The Royals answered with a pair of solo homers in the sixth, including a blast from Pasquantino and a solo shot from Jac Caglianone. All six runs were charged to Woo, who went six innings and allowed seven hits with two strikeouts. Randy Arozarena homered in the bottom of the sixth, knocking Cole Ragans out of the game after allowing four runs on four hits and three walks through 5.1 innings of work. Ragans also fanned eight batters.
Rodriguez tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with his second homer of the game, a two-run blast that went 416 feet to center field.
In the top of the eighth, it was Lane Thomas who came through with a clutch hit, lining a go-ahead RBI single to center field to make it 7-6. Matt Strahm and Lucas Erceg shut down the Mariners in the later innings to help secure the win for the Royals.
The Royals improve to 13-19 on the season, still at the bottom of the AL Central and 3.5 games out of first. Kansas City will go for the series win in Seattle, with Seth Lugo to take the mound to face Emerson Hancock. Pregame coverage will begin at 8, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m. on KMMO FM 102.9.
