The St Louis Cardinals went four-for-ten with runners in scoring position, including a bases-clearing double in the fourth, to put away the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on Monday, May 4 at Busch Stadium.

Both the Cardinals and Brewers scattered 11 hits, but it was the Cardinals who did a better job capitalizing on their base runners. JJ Wetherholt recorded the game’s first RBI when his single with two outs in the second scored Masyn Winn. In the fourth, a leadoff double to Nathan Church was followed by walks to Pedro Pagés and Wetherholt, setting up Iván Herrera’s double to center field that cleared the bases and made it a 4-0 game.

Luis Rengifo got Milwaukee on the board in the sixth, after a walk to Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick single ended starter Kyle Leahy’s night. Winn and Wetherholt added RBI singles later in the game, while Bryce Turang connected on a two-run home run in the top of the ninth, followed by a single to William Contreras, to bring about a save situation for Riley O’Brien. O’Brien got the two Brewers he faced out to end the game for his 10th save of the season.

The Brewers’ offense relied heavily on the top of the order, with Jackson Chourio going four-for-five including a pair of doubles, while Turang went three-for-five including his ninth-inning jack. However, they were only two-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Despite striking out nine times, Cardinals batters were able to record four doubles in the game while also drawing four walks.

Leahy got the win for St Louis, going 5.1 innings and allowing one run on six hits and two walks, while striking out five. Chad Patrick took the loss in his 3.1 innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks, recording four punchouts.

The Cardinals are 21-14, two games behind the Cubs for the NL Central lead. The Cardinals’ series against Milwaukee continues Tuesday when Andre Pallante gets the start against Brandon Sproat. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.
