A Sedalia police officer is recovering after a reported gunfire exchange with a suspect in a domestic disturbance Wednesday, May 6.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the shooting that occurred around 10 a.m. in the eastern part of Sedalia. According to the patrol, Sedalia police responded to the call on the 1000 block of South Garfield. When officers arrived, a man exited the residence and entered a pickup, allegedly in an attempt to flee. Officers pursued the man down Garfield, eventually reaching East 16th Street. At a stop sign, the suspect reportedly went in reverse and struck an officer’s vehicle. An officer is then believed to have fired his duty weapon at the suspect.

The pursuit then continued on East 16th, before the suspect’s vehicle stopped near South Arlington. Officers then discovered that the suspect was struck by gunfire, who was then taken into custody and treated at a nearby hospital. One of the officers involved in the chase was also treated at the hospital. Both injuries are described by the Highway Patrol as non-life threatening.

The Patrol is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Sedalia Police are investigating the domestic disturbance. The Pettis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is expected to receive and review both reports.
