Nick Castellanos once again provided the backdrop for a sob story, only this time it was the St Louis Cardinals he left crying, as he took a full-count, two-out pitch yard to force extra innings, where the San Diego Padres snatched a 3-2 win Sunday, May 10 at Petco Park.

Castellanos had pinch-hit in the seventh, but came up to bat in the ninth against closer Riley O’Brien. During the at-bat, Xander Bogaerts advanced to second on defensive indifference, then took third on a wild pitch. Castellanos battled from a 1-2 count, before sending a 99-mile-per-hour sinker to left-center field to tie the game. That countered the two-run home run Jordan Walker had in the top of the fourth, his 11th of the season, which was just one of the Cardinals’ three hits on the afternoon.

The Cardinals would draw their only walk in the tenth inning, when Masyn Winn got on base with two outs. However, he and the leadoff runner were both stranded José Fermín popped out. The Padres received an intentional walk from Gordon Graceffo, who then walked Fernando Tatis Jr to load the bases. A Manny Machado sacrifice fly was all the Padres needed to plate the walk-off winner.

Adrian Morejon made just one pitch in the game to get his third win of the year, recording Fermín’s pop-out. Walker Buehler had a quality start, allowing both Cardinals runs on three hits in six innings while striking out two. Kyle Leahy saw his two-hit performance turn into a no-decision, allowing four walks but striking out five in his five-inning start.

The Cardinals are now 23-17 and slip into a tie with Milwaukee for second in the NL Central, 3.5 games behind the Cubs. They’re off Monday as they travel to Sacramento to face the Athletics. Andre Pallante is projected to get the start Tuesday night, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m.
