Sedalia’s city council gave their approval last week to amendments in the city’s wastewater pretreatment process, emphasizing changes for industrial customers in and out of the city limits.

The changes to the 40-year-old ordinance were approved with a unanimous vote, and came after months of visits with a consultant firm and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. City administrator Matthew Wirt says staff led by pretreatment coordinator Brittany Wilbanks provided a run-down of the program and the proposed changes during a presentation at last week’s meeting.

During public comment at the end of the meeting, a septic service hauler criticized the council’s decision to have businesses shoulder more of the cost. Wirt defended the move.

Separately, the council approved a permit allowing Mid-State Specialty Eggs to bring their wastewater to the city’s treatment plants. Wirt notes that the permit is part of the company moving their production from their current location in the Beaman area to a new facility closer to Sedalia.

Also at last week’s meeting, Wilbanks presented Maxion Wheels, NuCor Steel, and Stanley Black and Decker with pretreatment awards recognizing their commitment to excellence in contributing to a safe water supply.
