The Missouri State Bears are making waves with their latest hire, bringing in one of the most decorated swimmers in U.S. Olympic history as an assistant coach.

Six-time Olympic champion Ryan Lochte was announced over the weekend as the newest member of the Bears’ swim and dive coaching team. Lochte has 12 total medals from four Olympic games, making him the third-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history behind Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky. Head coach Dave Collins says that Lochte’s experience and success will have an immediate impact on the program and student-athletes. Collins added that, “when you have the opportunity to bring in one of the best ever in our sport, you do everything you can to make it happen. Adding Ryan to the staff at Missouri State further shows the forward momentum of our program and the commitment we have from our administration.”

The 41-year-old Lochte competed in college for the Florida Gators, earning all-American honors 24 times, including swimmer of the year twice. He also claimed seven NCAA individual championships and seven SEC titles. He joins a program that saw the men win the Missouri Valley Conference title last February, their 21st in program history, while the women finished third. Lochte’s hire still needs the formal approval of Missouri State University’s Board of Governors.
