Three semi-trucks collided in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 on Thursday, May 14, resulting in serious injury to one of the drivers.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that one of the three trucks, a Mack driven by a 50-year-old man from Columbia, had stopped in traffic around 1:25 p.m. at the 35.8 mile marker, about two miles west of Odessa. That’s when another semi, a Peterbilt driven by a 44-year-old man from Lake Lotawana, struck the rear of the Mack. That caused the truck to overturn onto the towed unit of a Kenworth from Illinois. The Columbia driver was flown to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment, while the other two drivers had no reported injuries.
The crash resulted in traffic being stopped along westbound Interstate 70 for about three hours. As traffic was backing up, another collision occurred on the opposite end of Odessa, at the 39.2 mile marker. The Patrol reports that at around 2:30 p.m., a 19-year-old woman from Louisburg, Kansas attempted to overtake a semi-truck as it was slowing down. However, she struck the truck’s rear, then went off the roadway and into a ditch. She was also flown to a Kansas City area hospital, while the truck’s driver, a 35-year-old man from Clinton, had no reported injuries.
