A 37-year-old Sedalia man who allegedly stole a vehicle in December and led authorities on a high-speed pursuit on city streets a few days ago has been charged with multiple felonies.
According to a probable-cause statement, Matthew Jones is alleged to have stolen the vehicle between December 19 and 22 from the Temp Stop parking lot. On January 2, Jones reportedly led officers on the pursuit– during which his speed was clocked at as much as 65 miles per hour on city streets– out of the city limits. He reportedly stopped the vehicle at a residence that wasn’t his on Maltsbarger Road, allegedly entered illegally and fought with the resident of the house.
Online court documents say Jones, who was apprehended and arrested later on January 2 at a motel in Sedalia, has been charged with Class D Felonies for Stealing a Motor Vehicle and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree; a Class E Felony for Resisting Arrest, Detention or Stop by Fleeing, Creating a Substantial Risk of Serious Injury or Death to Any Person; and a misdemeanor for trespassing. Bond has been set at $50,000 cash or surety.
Jones appeared for an arraignment hearing on Thursday, January 4, and his cause has been continued for a counsel-status hearing at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, at Pettis County Circuit Court in Sedalia.
