Formal charges have been filed against a 26-year-old Kansas City man for allegedly trying to hold up a convenience store in Cooper County on Friday, July 6.
According to a post on the Cooper County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page, deputies were dispatched to Eagle Stop on Steven Kole Court in Boonville in reference to an armed robbery in progress. Deputies were able to arrest Elijah Devonta Carter without incident.
Authorities say a patron who noticed Carter’s suspicious behavior stayed in the area to observe him. When Carter reportedly approached the register and began to demand money, the patron was able to intervene with his concealed firearm and held Carter in the store until law enforcement arrived.
According to online court documents, a warrant has been issued and Carter has been charged with a Class B Felony for Attempted Robbery in the First Degree; a Class E Felony for Unlawful Use of a Weapon- Exhibiting; an Unclassified Felony for Armed Criminal Action; and a misdemeanor for receiving stolen property. Bond has not been set yet.
Carter’s initial hearing at Cooper County Circuit Court is pending.
