Saline County Emergency Management Agency Director Tony Day was at the meeting of the county commission on Thursday, January 17, and said there is inclement weather predicted for the area this weekend “on top of what we had last weekend, so our infrastructure might be a little stressed.”
Day said warming centers will be available in the county in the event of emergencies.
Day listed some of the locations where the warming centers will be available. He said in Malta Bend, it will be the school, if there is power.
Day also noted in Nelson, residents can use the community center as a warming center. In Marshall, the senior center and YMCA will be available during normal business hours. Day also said if he needs to open a Red Cross shelter, he can do so at the YMCA. Though, he says it’s usually after the second day of an event before that happens.
Day said he is really concerned about high winds knocking out electricity. He says winds are predicted to be as strong as 30 to 35 miles per hour at times over the weekend. He also says residents need to be wary of using space heaters because they can be dangerous, as well.
Day also says he can help with pets by taking them to the Marshall Animal Shelter up to its capacity. He also said some accommodations can be made at the Saline County Fairgrounds, if necessary.
Day advises persons who need to use the warming centers to contact city officials in order to open them outside of regular business hours.
