The National Fire Protection Association says space heaters are blamed for 80 percent of home heating-related fire deaths each year nationwide. During these dangerously-cold temperatures, State Fire Marshal Tim Bean says using space heaters as a primary heating source is dangerous.

Bean says keep your pets away from space heaters so they don’t accidently knock over the heating sources or sleep near them.
He also says power strips or extension cords should not be used with space heaters.
