The Marshall Police Department is investigating reports of spam calls coming from people claiming to be a Marshall Police officer or Saline County deputy.
According to a news release, the caller attempts to obtain personal information by posing as a police officer or a deputy sheriff investigating the possibility the person may have an active warrant for their arrest.
The scammer tells anyone who answers the call that they have attempted to reach the person by mail, but has received no response. Then the suspect requests that the potential victim provide his or her full name, address and Social Security Number over the phone in order to identify the call recipient’s identity. The suspects will threaten citizens with arrest if personal information or money is not provided.
The Marshall Police Department will not call you requesting personal information like your Social Security Number or your date of birth.
Spoofing technology allows a person to have a fraudulent number appear on the caller ID. In other words, the suspect may be calling you from another state or country but have a local number displayed, which may be the number of the Marshall Police Department or Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
If you receive a similar call, the police department advises you to hang up the phone and contact the Marshall Police Department at (660) 886-7411 or via e-mail at info@marshallmopolice.com.
