Marshall firemen battled brutally cold temperatures putting out a structure fire on Tuesday, January 2.
According to a release from the department, fire fighters were toned out at 1:18 a.m. to a residence in the 600 block of South Jefferson Avenue. They arrived on the scene at 1:22 a.m.
Upon arrival, fire fighters noticed heavy smoke coming from the roof of the structure. Upon entry into the residence, there was no fire nor smoke present in the living area; all fire was concentrated in the attic area.
Fire fighters gained access by cutting holes in the roof; and used 150- and 200-foot pre-connect hoses to douse the blaze. The fire reportedly was under control at 2:15 a.m., and the last unit left the scene at 3:53 a.m.
The two detectors in the residence reportedly did not alert the residents, however, no injuries were reported from the scene. Fire Chief Tony Day said the fire possibly could have been caused by a space heater.
Damage to the property was estimated at $30,000 and $15,000 to its contents.
