Earlier this week, the Fayette Board of Aldermen voted to approve an ordinance to declare volunteer fire fighters in the city as independent contractors.
Talking to KMMO News this morning, City Administrator Robin Triplett gave some background information on why the ordinance was considered.

Triplett said the city attorney did some research in regards to that, and after looking at state and federal laws, she felt that Fayette’s firemen were more of an independent contractor. But after more thought, aldermen met in special session earlier today to discuss the matter further.

Triplett said the old agreement is back in effect after the repeal. She said the fire fighters will be paid as before– on a per-call basis, as well as a monthly stipend be paid to the fire chief. She also said they will continue to be covered by worker’s-compensation insurance.
Triplett said the plan is to discuss the matter more during the next Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday, June 5.
