An area law-enforcement agency is warning residents about a device found at gas station in Cooper County on Friday, June 22.
According to a news release, a technician found an internal “skimmer” device inside one of the gas pump’s credit card readers at a gas station in Boonville. An internal skimmer device is designed to collect credit card information when a customer pays for fuel at the pump. The Boonville Police Department at this point in the investigation do not know how many people will be or have been affected by this, if any at all.
The Boonville Police Department advises residents to inspect the pump before paying by checking for any devices at the card reader and/or cameras mounted over head in such a way as to capture video of the key pad. Also, inspect the seals on the service doors of the pump and if they are broken, missing, or look suspicious, report it to an attendant.
If you find that your credit card has unauthorized purchases, report it to your credit card company and local law-enforcement agency as soon as possible.
