The MMU Board of Public Works had a follow-up discussion with a couple of city council members regarding a proposed increase in water rates during its meeting on Thursday, March 14.
General Manager Jeff Bergstrom said a 10-percent increase in water rates for customers is recommended due to mandated improvements to the water treatment plant, future capitol projects and an aging infrastructure. Bergstrom added the increase would result in a monthly increase of $2.25 for an average residential customer using 5,000 gallons of water per month. The implementation of the new rate has to be approved by both the board and city council.
Bergstrom thanked the council members who attended a recent work-session to introduce the rate increase which was questioned by some council members.

Bergstrom details the increase and hopes more information can shed light on why the increase is needed.

The council members in attendance suggested to the board to hold off on a decision to make sure the increase was the best possible solution and to give all city council members time to mull over the situation. The board tabled a decision on the rate increase.
Also, the board said it will schedule the topic to be discussed and voted on during its next meeting on Thursday, March 28.
