During his report at the Slater City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 4, Mayor Dr. Stephen Allegri wanted citizens to be aware of how the outdoor storm-warning sirens are activated during possible tornadic weather.

Allegri pointed out these sirens are to warn persons who might be outdoors- not necessarily to be heard by persons who are already inside. He said the persons who are inside are likely to have other devices on which they can receive weather alerts such as cell phones, weather radios, TVs, etc.
Allegri said it is the priority of officials to give citizens as much notice as possible, so at times it seems like it might be a little premature. But it’s been shown that the more time you have to prepare, the safer citizens will be. He said during the storm-siren activation, the Slater Police Department will unlock the east basement door to the Baptist Church on West Maple Street for citizens needing shelter. “We ask that you use the church shelter with respect, so continued use is allowed.”
Councilman Terry Jordan gave kudos to an area radio station for its coverage during the most-recent storms.

Allegri and City Administrator Gene Griffith made it clear that there will not be an all-clear siren. If a second siren is sounded, that means the situation has worsened or there is another storm and for all to take cover again.
Allegri also said: “After an emergency event expires, contact 9-1-1 or the Slater Police Department at (660) 529-2242 to report any damage so appropriate personnel can be contacted and dispatched.”
Allegri also reminds residents to stay away from any downed power lines. He said they still can be live and cause harm to people.
