Marshall Mayor Julie Schwetz expressed concern about possible dangers relating to the currently unused buildings on the campus formerly known as the Marshall Habilitation Center during the council meeting on Monday, November 18. She said this is because it is still unknown as to whether the city will receive a Community Development Block Grant to provide a good chunk of the funds to pay for their safe demolition.

Schwetz continued by asking: “By either hiring somebody to come in who can then get rid of some of that material and take it for what it is… Then there’s not an opportunity to go in and take it on their own?”
City Administrator David Haugland said the buildings still contain useful items.

Ward 2 Councilman Chuck Hines said: “Just a word of caution, as we go in there and clear out that scrap, there’s obviously some hazardous materials in there that we don’t want our folks in there trying to clear it out.”
The council noted it will discuss this more during a future meeting.
